“Kingfisher” - Faradena Afifi 2021
Air so cold, it dampens the skin
Flooded banks, reeds bend in the water
Silence cloaks the trees
In the misted sky, a cry pierces the scene
And a kingfisher vanishes in a flash of blue
And a kingfisher vanishes in a flash of blue
A crow sits on a frozen branch
Silver dusts mud below
Snowflakes drifting over dark water
In a pale sky, a cry pierces the scene
And a kingfisher vanishes in a flash of blue
And a kingfisher vanishes in a flash of blue
In a flash of blue, flash of blue
Sun is so hot, the ground it shimmers
Whispering reeds, by a teeming river
Light glitters on tumbling wings
Life flows while the river sings
Take my hand, together we’ll fly
Above the trees over the river
Take my hand
Because life vanishes in a flash of blue
Because life vanishes in a flash of blue
In flash of blue, flash of blue

Scarborough Fair
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley sage rosemary and thyme
Remember me to the one who lives there
She once was a true lover of mine
Tell her to make me a Cambric shirt
Parsley sage rosemary and thyme
Without any seams or needlework
Then she’ll be a true love of mine
Tell her to wash it in yonder well
Parsley sage rosemary and thyme
Which never drew water nor rain ever fell
Then she’ll be a true love of mine
Tell her to dry it on yonder thorn
Parsley sage rosemary and thyme
Which never bore blossom since Adam was born
Then she’ll be a true love of mine
Now he has asked me questions three
Parsley sage rosemary and thyme
I hope he will answer as many for me
Fore he’ll be a true love of mine
Tell him to buy me an acre of land
Parsley sage rosemary and thyme
Between the salt water and the sea sand
Then he’ll be a true lover of mine
Tell him to plough it with a ram’s horn
Parsley sage rosemary and thyme
And sew it all over with one pepper corn
Then he’ll be a true love of mine
Tell him to shear it with a sickle of leather
Parsley sage rosemary and thyme
And bound it all up with a pea cocks feather
Then he’ll be a true love of mine
When he has done and finished his work
Parsley sage rosemary and thyme
Tell him to come, and he’ll have his shirt
Then he’ll be a true love of mine
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley sage rosemary and thyme
Remember me to the one who lives there
She once was a true lover of mine
She once was a true lover of mine
She once was a true lover of mine
Lover, lover, lover, lover

Drowned Sailor

A young maid was a walking down on the sea strand
And spied a drowned sailor lain dead on the ground
And as she drew near him, it made her to a stand
For she saw it was her true love by the marks on his hand.
As he was a sailing the ocean so brave,
the ship it was wrecked by the wind and the waves
the storm was a raging and the billows loud did roar
which tossed this poor sailor all on the sea shore
She put her arms around him and cried “oh my dear”
she wept and she kissed him ten thousand time o’er
and I am contented to lie by your side
and in a few moments this lover she died
In yonder green churchyard this couple was laid
and a stone for remembrance was put on their grave
oh, my joys are all ended and my pleasures are fled
and this grave that we lie in is our married bed

The Last Call

The Last Call
It’s your last call, the very last call
If we have something, or nothing at all
On the crest of a wave, or swept up on the beach
Like driftwood on the sand
Will we still fly? Through misty skies
Into the blue, a welcoming light
So, should I stay? or simply walk away?
With tears falling on the sand
My arms feel so at home around you
When we embrace, there is love
And when I see into those soft brown eyes
Like a bird, my heart flies
Do you love me, as I love you?
Together, forever, or finally through?
In older years, will you still be here?
With our footprints on the sand

Bruton Town

In Bruton Town, there lived a noble, he had two sons and a daughter fair
By night and day, they were contrivin' to fill their sister's heart with care
One night, one night of restless slumber, one brother rose from his bed
He heard the servant court their sister, heard they had a mind to wed
He early rose the very next morning, a- hunting through the woods to go
And there he did this young man a-murder, in the bramble briar his body thrown
Oh brothers, brothers, why do you whisper? and what's become of the serving man?
We lost him when we been a-hunting, lost him where he'll ne'er be found!
She went to bed crying and lamenting, weeping for her own true love
And as she slept, she dreamed that she saw him, covered over with gore and blood
She early rose the very next morning, she searched the woods and the country round
Until she found her own dear jewel, in the bramble briar his body thrown
Three days, three nights, she did stay by him, kissed his eyes that could not see
to keep him from the heat of the sunshine, covered him with green leaves from off the tree
Three days three nights she did stay by him, thought her heart would break with woe
'til a cruel hunger came upon her and in despair to her home did go
Oh sister, sister why do you whisper? won't you tell us where you have been?
Stand off! stand off! you bloody butchers! my love and I, you both have slain!
In Bruton town, there lived a noble
